The Problem

Fast-growing discount retailer, B&M Retail, operates over 700 stores across the UK offering customers a broad range of FMCG brands and non-grocery products at great prices. With a desire to enhance efficiency and simplify the completion of daily operations, B&M recognised the need to replace existing mobile devices. Requiring an advanced technology suite to support its growth plans, B&M enlisted the help of technology specialists, TPP Retail.

The Solution

Working with the B&M team, we understood the need to optimise pricing, labelling, promotions, and stock management processes due to the fast pace at which the business operates. With our Retail IQ solution’s flexibility and built-in modules – Label IQ and Stock IQ – meeting these requirements, we demonstrated how modern, feature-rich software coupled with a multi-use device and support services could lead to advanced in-store operations.

The Project

Solution Migration

Based on its form factor, cutting-edge features and longevity of supply, Zebra’s TC21 was our recommended device. Having previously invested in Zebra mobile printers, the combination also allows B&M to benefit from maximum hardware compatibility.

With the solution decided, we provided a slicker, more user-friendly interface for store colleagues as well as improved existing processes to drive further in-store task efficiency. Carefully migrating from B&M’s legacy software to Retail IQ was vital to project success and required expert management by the TPP Retail team.

Total Device Management

Device management was something B&M took seriously but visibility had been a challenge. Enterprise MDM solution, 42 Gears, was recommended due to its sophisticated management capabilities for Android devices to provide B&M with full visibility of device usage and location, as well as the ability to deploy software and security updates, and remotely manage devices.

Seamless Rollout

With a deadline set for mid-November, the TPP Retail project team managed a seamless deployment across 700+ B&M stores in just four weeks.

By shipping ready-to-go devices directly to the stores, there was no need for in-store engineers thanks to the creation of clear documentation that guided colleagues through onboarding. A series of ‘how-to’ videos stored on each device were deployed to support colleagues who required additional training material.

Ongoing Support & Management

Providing vital support to B&M’s IT team with our Managed Service offering, we will take care of everything from security patches to Android software updates, device monitoring and analytics, as well as fulfilling administrative tasks to simplify day-to-day management for them.

Working in partnership with B&M’s technology service partner to fulfil swap management should a device be out of commission, we’re here to ensure that the B&M team in every store is armed with the devices they need to work effectively.


After a successful deployment, we’re delighted that TPP Retail will continue to support B&M through its managed service offering, taking care of device management and providing in-depth analytics to support B&M with the insight it needs to make informed decisions about the future of its hardware estate.
